Two events supremely impacted my deci- sion to write about the role of the African American Church and sexual abuse. The first event occurred during a conversation with a friend. She asked about my work with chil- dren and adolescents who have been sexual- ly abused. As I attempted to explain to her the prevalence of sexual abuse in our com- munity and the impact on sexual abuse sur- vivors, she stated, "That's nothing but the devil." Her response was simplistic and confirmed the unwillingness of many in our spiritual community to address something that is so horrific but likely affects us all in some way during our lifetimes.
