The Central American Studies program at California State University-Northridge (CSUN), established in 2000, was the first program of its kind established in the U.S. In Introduction to Central American Studies (Kendall Hunt Publishing Company, Iowa, 2008), authors Beatriz Cortez and Douglas G. Carranza, who helped launch the program, describe it as an emerging area study "that emphasizes the transnational character of Central American communities in the diaspora."
CSUN has enough Latinos enrolled that it qualifies as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), say the authors. Such an institution must, by the U.S. Department of Education definition, be a nonprofit with a full-time student ...
