The time has come for us to put on the gumboots of journalism and wade into the mucky mire of controversy currently swirling -- which is an extremely difficult thing for a mucky mire to do -- in the U.S. Heartland.

I am referring here to a dispute that has erupted in the state of Iowa, a normally happy, placid place filled with happy, placid people who take justifiable pride in their huge cornfields and legendary dairy products, such as the world-famous butter cow on display every year at the state fair, which runs Aug. 13-23.
