ALBANY, N.Y., June 9 -- New York State Sen. John A. DeFrancisco, R-Syracuse (50th District), issued the following news release:
It was lights out in the middle of the New York State Senate's session Monday.
"Obviously this wouldn't be the New York State Senate if there wasn't some excitement going on," said Democratic leader Malcolm Smith.
Smith and some other Democrats walked out of the chamber after former allies Pedro Espada and Hiram Monserrat made a move to vote with the Republicans.
The new so-called "coalition" majority then voted on changes to the leadership and Senate rules. Coalition members say they were tired of waiting for the Democrats to initiate reform.
