It was a Tuesday morning when I entered the art room storage closet to gather the old hardback books for my students. My eighth-grade students seemed to have a sense of urgency to start their work after I explained that they would design a book cover representing who they were "on the outside." Several students rushed back with me, trying to get old hardback books from the closet, even though I only asked two students for help. When I looked up from the books, the other students were so excited to choose books that they were all standing inside the closet.
