Over the past century, reading researchers have made substantial progress in understanding reading - determining what expert readers do during reading, explaining how children learn to read, and uncovering the underlying causes of reading difficulties. They have reached a general consensus on the aspects of reading that are amenable to instruction and that need to be in place for students to learn to read with understanding (See Adams, 1990; Alvermann, Fitzgerald, & Simpson, 2006; Snow, Burns, & Griffin, 1998; Rayner, Foorman, Perfetti, Pesetsky, & Seidenberg, 2001 for recent reviews).
