Article: Pennsylvania banks top rankings of ROE

A leading banking industry trade publication has ranked 24 Pennsylvania banking companies - more than any other state - among the top 200 community banks in the United States, the state Department of Banking said June 15.

The annual ranking, published in the June 2009 issue of U.S. Banker magazine and compiled by SNL Financial LC, is based on the average return on equity (ROE) for the past three years. ROE is the ratio of a bank's net income to its total capital equity. It is a measure of how effectively a company's management uses investors' money.
