Midstate Wal-Marts are receiving a makeover.

At the core of the renovations is a focus on aesthetics. The merchandise is being displayed in a cleaner, more open layout that is easier to navigate. Lower-profile shelving also attempts to contribute to improving the shopping experience.

Wal-Mart leaders are looking to complete overhauls on more than 500 of their 4,100 stores nationwide this year, with 80 percent of the chain being converted within five years, said Kurt Knaus, a spokesman for Arkansas-based Wal-Mart Stores Inc.
