Article: Ampara medical students claim discrimination

Colombo, Aug. 11 -- Twenty nine students from the Ampara district who were selected to do medicine are up in arms against the University Grants Commission (UGC) for admitting them to the Eastern University in Batticaloa despite their having sufficient Z-score marks to enter any medical faculty in the south - which faculties have better facilities.

Even student Hyrullah Moulana Sekha Farhath, whose island rank is 165th and district rank is first has been admitted to the Eastern University. These students have now formed an organization to fight for their right to study at a medical faculty in the south on the strength of their Z-score marks.
