Atypical clinical symptoms may mask underlying disease

New Haven, Conn. - The hallmark symptoms of diffuse myxedema may not always be as clinically apparent upon presentation as expected.

In a recent case study, a 13-yearold boy presented with a nine-month history of numerous 2 mm, skin-toned, firm papules that started on the cheeks, with subsequent spread to the upper back, extensor arms and upper medial thighs. The remainder of the patient's skin was mildly xerotic, but otherwise of normal texture and appearance, showing no edema or underlying sclerosis. The patient's hair was dry and dull, there was no madarosis, and nails were normal.
