Only one of JoAnna and Herb Dawson's three cars, five pickups and SUVs, a motor home and 18 motorcycles parked at their home in the Paradise Valley qualified as a "clunker" under the federal government's trade-in program.

And the 1988 Cadillac they traded in Monday was a doozy.

The driver's seat permanently leaned 45 degrees into the back seat area, rust crawled from under the paint, and the vinyl roof had cracked like dried mud. On top of that, the air conditioning and radio were dead, the rearview mirror was missing, and the back tires were bald as a china plate. And, when Herb Dawson closed the trunk for the last time, the Cadillac insignia fell off.
