THE THREE major market segments for scrap tires - tire derived fuel, rubber products and civil engineering applications - have been growing steadily. Since the inception of the Scrap Tire Management Council (STMC) and its tracking efforts, the number of annually generated scrap tires having markets has increased from 11 percent (25 million) in 1990 to 38 percent (68 million) in 1992, and then to 56 percent (138 million) in 1994.
