Site preparation starts on attraction, but opening delayed
The sounds of machinery are once again echoing down Third Street in Columbia, and William Ashley said he thinks his great-grandfather would be pleased.
Dwight Stewart Ashley co-founded the Ashley & Bailey Silk Mill at Third and Linden streets inthelate 19th century. But by the beginning of the 21st century, the mill had cycled through a series of uses and sat abandoned above Route 30, substantial trees poking through its floor.
Construction began in Jury to transform the mill into a tourist attraction that proponents estimate will draw 250,000 to 350,000 visitors each year when it opens in spring 201 1.
