Boycotting big-box stores

I own a small business in Hawthorne. I believe in supporting small, local businesses, and I try to do that whenever possible. I know I can save money using the big-box stores (Staples, Office Depot, etc.), but I choose to do business with a local office supply store in Midland Park.

I do this because I believe we have to respect the small-business owner. He or she is employing local residents; he or she is paying local taxes; he or she might be my neighbor. I think what the state of New Jersey has done here is wrong on many different levels ("Losing contract to Staples wasn't easy on small businesses," Aug. 31).
