A team of scientists has modified specific Na+ transport processes in specific cell types of Arabidopsis thaliana to produce reduced shoot accumulation of Na+, an important component of salt tolerance in many higher plants. The research team - based at the University of Adelaide's Waite Campus in Australia and headed by Mark Tester (School of Agriculture, Food, and Wine at the University of Adelaide and the Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics) announced in July that it had used a new genetic modification technique to keep salt - as sodium ions (Na+) out of the leaves of A. thaliana.
