Article: OBITUARIES: GEORGE R. RUMNEY 1914-2009

George Richard Rumney - climatologist, marine scientist, author, and University of Connecticut Professor Emeritus- died of natural causes on 25 April 2009 in Sarasota, Florida. His 1968 college textbook, Climatology and the World's Climates, laid the foundations for the burgeoning study of climate and climate change. He was 94 years old, and after retirement had lived in Groton Long Point, Connecticut, and Sarasota.

An assistant professor hired in 1948 by the Uniof Connecticut (UCONN)'s Department of Geology, George soon persuaded his colleagues and the administration that the broad study of geogramerited its own separate department, which subsequently reestablished at UCONN's Storrs campus.
