The Comédie-Française is France's most prestigious theatre company. Founded in 1680, the troupe now has three theatres in Paris: the Salle Richelieu (862 seats) is an Italian style house constructed in 1790, and has been home to the Comédie-Française since 1799. The Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier (founded by Jacques Copeau in 1914) was acquired by the state in 1986, and renovated as a 300-seat second house for the ComédieFrançaise. In 1996, a 135-seat Studio-Theatre was opened by the troupe in the Carrousel du Louvre. The company consists of thirty-six sociétaires (permanent members of the troupe) and twenty-one pennsionnaires.
