EARLY ON the morning of December 18, 2001, a massive five-alarm fire at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Divine lit up the skyline of Morningside Heights in Manhattan. The fire completely destroyed the cathedral's gift shop, housed for many years in the unfinished North Transept, but fortunately failed to take a firm hold in the Crossing, Nave, or eastern regions of the cathedral itself. It did, however, cause considerable physical damage to two 17thcentury Barberini tapestries, and there was also extensive smoke and soot damage throughout the building and its contents.
