Competition for Eilat, Israel's #1 tourist resort

THE RED SEA RESORT OF EILAT IS SET TO enjoy a boost to its winter tourist statistics as thousands of foreign visitors are expected to arrive, seeking the pleasures of a Red Sea winter, combined with an impressive selection of hotel accommodation, to suit every pocket.

In the year 2000, just before the intifada, 2.6 million tourists came to Israel, of whom 402,000 visited Eilat. By the end of 2003, following the intifada years, the total dropped to over one million (JEWISH STAR, Jan. 23, 2004).

But now tourists are flocking to the country, and by the end of last year tourism was pretty much at the 2000 level.
