In the heat of the Southland's airport battles, John Wayne Airport and its counterpart in Long Beach came under fire for not handling more of the region's demand for air travel.
It's not as strong a jab as it used to be.
John Wayne and Long Beach Airport have seen gains in passengers this year as the region's hub, Los Angeles International Airport, has suffered. There's no wholesale shift away from LAX. But the numbers are notable.
In July, John Wayne's passenger head count was 744,875, up 2.5% from a year ago. Through July, John Wayne has seen 4.5 million travelers go through its gates, matching the first seven months of 2000, a banner year for air travel.
