A woman shared a story with me that demonstrated the profound impact that folic acid can have in pregnancy. Donna* had a baby born with a neural tube defect (NTD) called spina bifida. This baby survived only a few days. Donna planned a second pregnancy, and took a therapeutic dose of a folic acid supplement before pregnancy and in the first trimester.
