A woman shared a story with me that demonstrated the profound impact that folic acid can have in pregnancy. Donna* had a baby born with a neural tube defect (NTD) called spina bifida. This baby survived only a few days. Donna planned a second pregnancy, and took a therapeutic dose of a folic acid supplement before pregnancy and in the first trimester. She had a baby born with no NTD. A year later Donna became pregnant again, this time unexpectedly. Since she had not planned to become pregnant, she was not taking a folic acid supplement. This baby was also born with a NTD.
