There is a staggering amount of information in Roy Pateman's scholarly yet quirkily self-indulgent treatise on the politics and legacy of Richard Wagner. The English-born adjunct professor at UCLA seems to have read just about everything pertinent to Wagner in the English language, but his prolific knowledge is submerged in a sea of pretentious prose and academic gobbledygook that must daunt the most avid and learned Wagnerite.
