Article: Remembering Donizetti

November 29, 1997, will be the 200th anniversary of the birth of Gaetano Donizetti. I am not a great advocate of calling attention to composers simply on account of a birthday - if you like the music, do it! The musical establishment is usually more than willing to call attention to anniversaries -- witness, most notoriously, Mozart's. But Donizetti's anniversary has gone by largely uncelebrated, and that is a major pity, because the composer deserves greater recognition (as Steven Blier argues in his page 36 article).
