Article: Congress urges more Coast Guard Reserve recruiting

As noted in the August issue of The Officer, the Senate Armed Services Committee has included language in the Senate Report on the National Defense Authorization Act for FY98, as advocated by ROA, on Coast Guard Reserve recruiting. The following is an extract.

"The committee has become increasingly aware of the unique capabilities of the Coast Guard Reserve and the value of the Coast Guard Reserve as an augmentee to the Department of Defense in times of national emergency.

"In view of the foregoing, the committee is concerned that the Coast Guard Reserve's end-strength has fallen significantly below the authorized and appropriated level for fiscal year 1996 and remains so for fiscal year ...
