The US. social security system is a gargantuan fact of American life. To one degree or another, all Americans live in its shadow. They see social security in a variety of ways, their views depending upon incomes, ages and politics, among many other factors. That makes for a major challenge in reporting about social security and about efforts to change the system. Economist Frank Wykoff offers ways of approaching the story that can lead to understanding and clarity.
