The relationships between perfectionism, standards for academic achievement, and emotional distress in postsecondary students

Researchers investigated a multidimensional approach to perfectionism using 3 dimensions: self-oriented perfectionism, other-oriented perfectionism, and socially prescribed perfectionism. Participants were 178 first year postsecondary students (93 males, 85 females) classified into three age groups: direct entry (ages 18 to 19), mature students (ages 25 and older) and other students (ages 20 to 24). Results suggest that both personal standards for academic achievement and appraisals of standards held by significant others are important facets of students' transition experience to postsecondary education.
