The city of Montreal is collecting compostable food residuals and yard trimmings from 17,000 households. The pilot program -- which also works with restaurants and offices - was instituted last May by the city's Service de Properte and has been extended to 13 areas. Residents in single family homes were provided with 25-liter brown plastic bins for the food/yard trimmings; a separate green bin is used for recyclables, and green bags for regular garbage. A seven-liter container was also provided for kitchen discards.
