Implications of the new technology for pathology: Descending levels of analysis

In pathology, there are three levels of analysis-macroscopic, microscopic, and molecular. The descent down these levels is a reflection of scientific progress in pathology. Historically, macroscopic or gross analysis came first with the rise of morbid anatomy during the Renaissance. This period was initially characterized by an increase in the understanding of normal anatomy through meticulous dissections and observations. However, in a very short time, the dissections revealed frequent deviations from normal, which subsequently led to the development of morbid anatomy.1 It was soon realized that these deviations often explained symptoms during life or the cause of death.
