A well-known general practitioner in southeastern Minnesota, Dr. William Worrall Mayo, father of the famous Mayo brothers, was also skilled in the surgical treatment of "female complaints." In 1866, he successfully treated a woman with a large abdominal tumor. The procedure was described in a local newspaper under the headline, "An Important Surgical Operation." The patient's tumor rendered her helpless and threatened her life. Assisted by the patient's physician, Dr. Mayo extracted approximately 5 gallons of a "thick, gluey substance," and the patient experienced considerable relief.
