Dr. Wright: The Antihypertensive and Lipid-Lowering Treatment to Prevent Heart Attack Trial (ALLHAT) is a comparison of a dihydropyridine, a calcium channel blocker (amlodipine), an alpha-blocker (doxazosin), and an ACE inhibitor (lisinopril), each compared with a thiazide-type diuretic (chlorthalidone). In addition, there is a lipid-lowering arm in a cohort of the trial comparing pravastatin with usual care. Patients will be followed for 6 years.
