Article: China: Reforms upgrade wool textile industry

Drastic changes have taken place in the Chinese wool textile industry as it underwent large-scale restructuring during the last five years.

Approximately 300,000 outdated wool spindles were scrapped between 1998 and 2000. The industry's spindles are currently stable at approximately 3.6 million. Advanced spindles and wool looms at advanced 1990s level amount to 1.41 million and 5,931 sets respectively, accounting for 40% and 26% of the industry's total. Of this, the proportion of shuttleless looms has reached 23%.
