The potential for systemic toxicity and neurotoxicity is considered during drug evaluation and approval and is included in the "Adverse Reactions" and "Warnings" sections in the labeling of local anesthetic solutions. An adverse reaction is defined as an undesirable effect that may occur as part of the pharmacologic action of the drug, whereas warnings identify any potentially fatal adverse reaction. Postmarketing reports of systemic or neurotoxicity may result in modifications in the labeling, the local anesthetic formulation, or both.
