The Gulf States are rich in oil, but almost entirely dependent on imported consumer goods and technology. Once

travellers and traders, the lifestyles of Gulf Arabs have changed drastically. Gone are the nomad tribes herding goats, sheep and camels. Now they ride in Mercedes and live in smart villas in new cities which have mushroomed in the desert wastes. High rise buildings have replaced mud huts and the ancient tracks are covered with fast highways, convenient routings and frequent airports.
