Mapping the Media: A Media Literacy Guidebook was published in 1997 in a cooperative effort between ISGS and M&T Communications. This new book provides teachers, students, and others with an introduction to the growing discipline of Media Literacy. We reprint here Gregg Hoffmann's introduction followed by reproduction of three lessons as they appear in the book (reduced to fit ETC page size).

MEDIA LITERACY has begun to blossom in American education. However, its development lags behind that in other countries. Critical thinking has become more established in mainstream education, yet it also continues to prompt some controversy.
