Music-lovers and musicians have much to be thankful for to the Swiss musician Paul Sacher, whose Basle Chamber Orchestra, which he founded and directed for many years, was responsible for commissioning and performing a whole clutch of 20th-century masterpieces, including Bartok's Music for Strings, Percussion and Celeste, Stravinsky's Concerto in D and A Sermon, A Narrative and a Prayer, Honegger's Second Symphony, Martin's Petite Symphonie Concertante and many other works.
