Public participation in shaping health services is at risk from the 'tyranny of targets' in NHS care, a leading policy expert told conference.
Anna Coote, director of health policy at the King's Fund, said good clinical practice required input from expert patients but that their involvement could slip down the list of priorities of beleaguered managers who were busy trying to meet government objectives. There was also a risk of 'involvement fatigue' -- a consequence of having talked about public participation for so long.
