Ignoring a patient's wish to "die with dignity" could land you in court-and in the middle of a media firestorm. Just ask the defendants in these lawsuits.

Lawrence Kline, a pulmonary specialist in San Diego, was stunned at being sued for keeping a patient alive against his wishes.

"Helping terminally ill patients die comfortably is an important part of being a physician for me," says Kline, who once treated Mother Teresa at the Scripps Clinic. "It's inexcusable to ignore advance directives. It deprives patients of the opportunity for a peaceful death and leaves families exposed to incredible expenses."
