To have or not to have--That is the question: Host nation support and British overseas force deployment options

In the post-Cold War world, Host Nation Support is a very useful concept around which British overseas force deployments can be built. However, the uncertain nature of this modern world means that such host nation support cannot be relied upon. With the new Government's emphasis on Britain's 'internationalist' role, British forces will need to be able to operate overseas with the guaranteed availability, of basing options. Taken together, this means that Britain must rely on sovereign assets to support its pursuit of its overseas interests. This in turn means basing joint force capabilities around sovereign, maritime power.
