This December marks the 100th birthday for the senior senator from South Carolina, Strom Thurmond. He is the first sitting United States senator to become a centenarian. What an amazing record for an amazing man!

In his 100 years on this earth, Senator Thurmond has been a teacher, coach, attorney, judge, governor, soldier, college professor, author, and a U.S. senator who has served 47 years and cast more than 15,000 votes.

Senator Thurmond was born into the Old South in the town of Edgefield. His grandfather, George Washington Thurmond, was with General Lee at Appomattox when Lee surrendered to Grant. His father, Judge J. William Thurmond, was a lieutenant of the legendary South Carolina ...
