Remembering God: Collective memory in Israelite religion

IN RECENT YEARS, collective memory in ancient Israel has emerged as a significant subject in biblical studies. While memory in broad terms has long been studied, collective memory as a cultural phenomenon has come into its own only in the last decade in the biblical and ancient Near Eastern fields. Jan Assman has addressed the subject for the ancient Near East and especially Egypt, and Gerdien Jonker has addressed the subject for Mesopotamia.1 Joseph Blenkinsopp, Marc Brettler, and Ronald S.
