The FDA has approved a 1-mg tablet formulation of finasteride (Propecia, Merck & Co, Inc) for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia in men (male pattem hair loss). The original 5-mg tablets (Proscar) were approved to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Labeling states that safety and efficacy have been demonstrated only in men aged 18 to 41 years with mild to moderate hair loss in the vertex and anterior mid-scalp areas. Approval was based on three clinical trials in 1,879 such men, two evaluating hair loss at the vertex (N = 1,215) and one evaluating hair loss in the anterior mid-scalp area.
