It is the best of times; it is the worst of times. Nuclear medicine, in a global sense, is thriving. New radiopharmaceuticals are being developed; PET, particularly in oncology, is becoming recognized as a powerful clinical tool; and nuclear cardiology has become an essential part of the standard of care for patients with coronary artery disease. Numerous other examples of recent applications of radioactive tracer methodology abound: PET/CT, lymphoscintigraphy, and antibody therapy. We are now on the verge of taking advantage of huge advances in molecular biology and will probably image reporter genes and possibly antisense ligands to specific sites in DNA and RNA.
