Article: Travel agents facing change

Bad news during this turbulent economy is traveling fasterand more often-than vacationers and corporate travelers.

While travel agents remain optimistic 2003 will show a slight uptick, the industry is a long way from the record revenue amassed in 2000. It's not the first time travel agents have been hit by a sluggish economy, but simply waiting out the storm may not keep agencies afloat this time.

"The people who have hung on to the old ways of doing things are either going out of business or are on their way out," said Richard Copland, president of the American Society of Travel Agents, an Alexandria, Va.-based industry trade group representing more than 20,000 travel agents nationwide. ...
