Police executives should want to hire more women officers for many reasons. Data drawn from seven major police departments indicate women officers cost substantially less than their male counterparts in terms of civil liability payouts for excessive force lawsuits. Women officers are also significantly underrepresented compared to male officers in both citizen complaints of all kinds and sustained allegations of excessive force.
This under-representation of women among the ranks of violent officers takes into account that women currently comprise only 12.7% of sworn law enforcement personnel in large agencies across the country. It could be expected, that female officers in large agencies ...
