Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan has appointed Muhammad Abdul Aziz, one of three men convicted of assassinating Malcolm X in 1965, as captain in charge of Mosque No. 7-the historic Harlem temple the black Muslim activist headed before his murder, the Voice has learned.
In addition, NOI sources said, Aziz, 59, will be Farrakhan's new East Coast regional security chief, [continued on page 42 responsible for reorganizing the Fruit of Islam-the NOl's once feared paramilitary wing whose significance diminished rapidly after Malcolm's death.
