Dealing with diabetes

Diabetes. Experts call it the silent epidemic, because half of the 16 million Americans who have this disease don't know it. You could be one of them.

A few generations ago, diabetes was fatal. Most diabetics died prematurely, many within three years of diagnosis. Treatments, such as forced starvation, were almost as bad as the disease. But all that has changed. With the discovery of insulin in 1921, truly effective treatment became possible. Today, most people with diabetes can live long and active lives.
