Combining counseling and family law: What every counselor should know about collaborative law procedure

Collaborative Law Procedure offers a new legal method for resolving divorce and family law cases. While some attorneys may already attempt to work amicably in the practice of family law, the Texas legislature recently created a Collaborative Law Procedure that defines and delineates an alternative to litigation. This article will highlight the deficiencies of the litigation/mediation model in matters of family law and describe Collaborative Law Procedure in theory and practice. In addition, by integrating practices of the counseling and legal disciplines, it will provide practical ways counselors might be involved in Collaborative Law Procedure.
