Rock Island unchanged after 4 idle years

Nearly three years since it was removed from a list of potentially contaminated sites, the Rock Island oil refinery on the city's far-northwest side remains idle.

And no buyers have come forward for the facility, which has been for sale by Marathon Oil Co. since it was shut down in 1993.

Though some interest has been shown in taking Rock Island off Marathon's hands, the refinery is proving to be a tough sell.

"We've had some people look at the refinery. We've had some discussions," said Marathon spokesman Bill Ryder.
