Force of Finnish Music
Is there an international Finnish conspiracy or what? A pack of Pekkas, a jam of Jukkas, and an avalanche of Ollis are pouring out of that small northern nation at an astonishing rate. Einojuhani Rautavaara is perhaps the most recognizable (if unpronounceable) name in contemporary Eurocomposition. But he's just the leader of the iceberg. As WNYC's John Schaefer noted at the Brooklyn Philharmonic's recent Sibelius Interplay" concert, Helsinki is a "virtual Disneyland of composers." What's going on?
