Significant advances in the field of ocular allergy continue to emerge, as evidenced in newly introduced and possible future therapies. For seasonal allergy sufferers, the release of olopatadine hydrochloride (Patanol,Alcon) has been a major therapeutic advance, agree experts in this area. In addition to blocking H1 receptors in the conjunctiva, this agent has been shown to have mast cell stabilizing properties, explained Michael Raizman, MD, who is medical director, cornea service, New England Eye Center, Boston.
